I really need to go back into my computer history and trace exactly how I came across The-Drum. That whole discovery is such a blur! It’s like I heard this mixtape, impulsively requested a Q&A interview, and got what I wanted. Oh now I remember! It was through Dis Magazine where I saw their music video for ”$”. Along with feeling like ‘I NEED MORE OF THEIR MUSIC’ I was also like, ‘DAMN I NEED MORE OF THEIR INFORMATION’, so here it is :) My lil discussion with Chicago’s quite storm, The-Drum. Let’s get sexy after the jump!

Okay, so I am very new to The-Drum. Your music puts me in a dreamy state. Like an X-rated fairytale that has a lot of texture to it. But how would you describe your music because I’m not all that great with descriptions?!
Our music is an amalgamation of sounds we like and production techniques we are interested in based around certain concepts. We like to make tracks that are lush, dense, disorienting, and warrant multiple listens. Rap is an influence but not something we are married to. Watch out for our smooth jazz flute album, just kidding.
I saw a ”$” music video made by Mary Rachel. Have you seen it?! Was it meant to be ironic because that’s what I took away from it. No the video for “$” isnt ironic to us. The idea is like you are watching YouTube on LSD. At the beginning of the video it zooms into YouTube then lots of crazy shit happens. Mary Rachel is awesome and super fun to work with. She didn’t need much direction. We liked her uploaded short videos and asked her if she would be down to make a video for us and it turned out pretty awesome/crazy. People never know what to say about it, just that they like it but they don’t know why.
When did The-Drum start making music? We started making music in our basement around November 2010. We had been friends for a couple years before that and just wanted to start a production team to make weird tracks for singers and rappers. Then we realized we have no real clout to just up and do that so we decided to put ourselves out there as producers to make a name for ourselves.
Do you have a particular creative process? We both just work on music all the time, so sometimes I’ll come to Jeremiah with a track I started, or he will come to me with a track, or we will just start one together. Sometimes we work around a sample, sometimes we start with a beat and build off it, sometimes we will hear a track and it will inspire us to make something, just whatever comes natural.
That ‘Mix for Smug’ is hella dope. What inspires your mixes as well as your original tracks? Thanks! Certain illegal substances have a pretty big influence on the music. Mixes kind of come natural from the tracks we are listening to at the time. Sometimes we will have a concept going to a mix, we are about to start a new one that is an ambient/chill out mix. The idea originally was to have no drums but I’m sure some will creep up in there.
Who are some of your favorite newer music acts? LOVE: White Car, Sich Mang, Mal A Goomba, Le1f, HTDW, SupCuts, Lil Durk, Mr 666, Gel Set, Physical Therepy, Morri$, Valentin Stip, and so many others!
Would you rather live life in a thermal filter or sepia? Thermal Filter… FUCK SEPIA gross
What does The-Drum do IRL?! The-Drum IRL » smoke a bunch of weed, work on music, hang out listen to music
What’s the scene like in Chicago? How do you make the most out of living in the city? I don’t know what the “scene” is like. We make the most of the city by hanging with lots of different kind of musicians and talking about music and sharing ideas and tracks.
What do you want to be remembered for this year and in the future? This year I would like us to be remembered as great producers that came into their own fast. “Heavy Liquid” came out in January, our split with Sich Mang came out right after that in the same week, our track with Haleek Maul got lots of love, our new EP comes out next month (July 17th on Mishka), we have another EP with Sich Mang done, and we are putting the finishing touches on our full length. We also have more remixes and lots of other tracks that might get turned into new projects. I just want people to see/hear all this..the progression, how we have expanded our sound, and how we are changing. I would like us to be remembered as the best new producers to come out in 2012 (smiley face!)
